Hitching Post: Carla and Brett Waltz

When Brett Waltz first asked Carla Ryan out on a date, she hesitated. The two had known each other from the Peach Lake community and had recently begun working together at Brett’s landscaping business. She was a newly single mother and had taken the job to help support her two young daughters. What would it mean to start dating Brett? She thought of all the things that could go wrong; she wanted to protect her heart.

The couple had known each other as friends while living in Peach Lake. They had a lot of friends in common, including Brett’s sister, who was already a friend of Carla’s and has children of similar ages to Carla’s.

“You don't know what the end will be, and you don't want to get the kids involved with something that won't go anywhere,” Carla said about her initial reticence.

The date happened, and everything clicked. Before long, the two were spending a lot of time together.

Then the pandemic hit.

“I said, well this is it, how are we going to deal with this?” Carla recalled. The pandemic proved a test for a lot of couples—either revealing incompatibility or strengthening bonds. For Carla and Brett, it was the latter.

“We just became closer,” Carla said. “We were together all the time.”

On Christmas morning 2020, Carla and her daughters were opening presents with Brett when he pointed out that there was one last gift under the tree. As she pulled out the small box, Brett got down on one knee and proposed.

“I couldn't stop crying,” Carla said. “We just hugged each other, and we all cried. The kids couldn't be happier. My mom was there, too, and just broke down crying.”

This August, Carla and Brett married each other before 110 people at the amphitheater at Mountain Lakes Park in North Salem. It was especially meaningful as the couple and Carla’s girls had spent so much of their pandemic time exploring the various trails that wind throughout the park.

“I guess a fairy tale does come true,” said Carla. “I found my prince charming, and I couldn't be happier.”
