North Salem Athletics announces schedule for high-risk winter sports, opens up registration
North Salem Athletic Director Denise Kiernan sent a note to families Thursday evening providing season dates and registration information for high-risk winter sports including ice hockey, wrestling and boys and girls basketball for high school students.
"On behalf of the Athletic Department and the Coaching staff, we look forward to sharing your child’s experience as we learn more about COVID-19 and the challenges that we are presented with on a daily basis regarding athletics," said Kiernan. She also cautioned that, "it is important to note that as of writing this we are still pending authorization from the Westchester County Department of Health to begin these sports."
Section One Athletics approved a season to run Monday, February 1 through March 14, pending Department of Health approval. The season dates account for regional championships for each sport. While spectators will not be permitted, the school will plan to live stream the boys and girls basketball games. Boys and girls basketball will permit spectators for their respective senior nights only.
Students were given the option to register for these sports from now through Sunday, January 31 at 11PM.
Chris Regan, North Salem Boys varsity basketball coach, expressed appreciation for the effort it took to put a season together. “Our AD Denise Kiernan and school nurse, Rita Driscoll, have done so much heavy lifting this week, and into the weekend as well, to make it happen. We are all looking forward to getting back into the gym with the kids. It's been a long haul, and the whole season will be a sprint to March 14.”
The shortened winter season for high school athletes will overlap by one week with the "Fall II" season, which will run from March 8 through April 25 for volleyball and girls swimming. Spring sports will run from April 19 through June 13.
Modified winter sports for students in grades 7 and 8 have been canceled Section-wide. The Middle School plans to offer boys and girls basketball intramurals for all students in those grades.
